For the last three years, it seems our world has been hit with countless crises. There have been numerous catastrophic events that have affected us on a global scale, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war.
With everything that is happening at this time, it’s so important for communities to band together for the greater good. Families are struggling with health concerns and inflation and may be feeling distraught with having the face the aftermath of these crises. Many folks want to help but don’t know how. As your community bank and neighbors, we’d like to offer a few ideas on how you can help the community heal through the gift of giving.
How Does Giving to Your Community Help it Heal?
Giving back to your community makes such a lasting, positive impact on everyone; it allows for a brighter future. Showing compassion to your community members can be a blessing, as it can give them hope. By volunteering, donating money or resources, or simply spending time with your fellow community members, you can benefit one’s well-being and sustain their livelihood. There’s a quote we’d like to share from author Deborah Day that reiterates this sentiment beautifully:
“Connecting with those you know love, like, and appreciate you restores the spirit and gives you the energy to keep moving forward in this life.”
So here are some helpful tips on how you can take action and make a difference.
Donate
There are many ways in which you donate to directly give back without breaking the bank. Yes, we know that what often comes to mind when one says to “donate” is money. But you can donate your time, skills, and certain items to help your community thrive.
Is there a cause you are passionate about? Do you have a favorite local charity or organization? You could look into volunteering for one! For example, the Alleghany Highlands YMCA loves welcoming volunteers to personally help community members. If you have any special skills or talents (that could be anything from cooking to robotics), you may want to consider teaching a class or workshop at the Y. Or if you have a knack for planning, maybe you’d be interested in helping out with their Special Events! The opportunities are endless.
Did you excel in a particular subject in school? There may be some students who could use your expertise! Whether they’re they need assistance solving algebra or conjugating verbs in Spanish, having you in their corner can reduce much stress for them (and their families!). Sometimes getting individualized help and a fresh perspective is a perfect solution.
Additionally, you could start a donation bin and encourage your neighbors to get in on the giving. Do you or your family have any clothes that you don’t wear anymore? You could put them in the donation bin and ask your friends to drop off their items as well. When the bin gets full, take it over to the Covington Goodwill Center!
You might want to also consider donating blood to the American Red Cross! Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Your donation would help accident and burn victims, heart surgery and organ transplant patients, and cancer patients. You can find a blood drive near you on the Red Cross website.
Lastly, if you have any extra money left over from your tax refund, you could donate some to one of the local school districts to give back to the youth in our community! To do that, you might want to contact the district superintendent or school board and offer your donation in writing. Organize a Drive
A simple and fun way you can give back is by organizing a community drive. You could try to raise money for a cause, or collect non-perishable food, school supplies, or sanitary products. Try using social media to spread the word! There’s also the COPE Food Pantry at McAllister Memorial Presbyterian Church where you could donate food.
One way to raise funds that’s sure to draw attention is a neighborhood bake sale! Tell your friends, family, and neighbors to make their favorite sweet treats. This tried and true method is sure to go over well.
Another way to help your community heal and bring everyone closer together is by hosting a walk or run for a cause! This would be a great opportunity to bond with one another and get some fresh air. There are a number of websites that offer tips on how to hold your own race!
Shop Local
The inflation and supply chain issues are hurting small businesses everywhere. You can help Alleghany Highlands’ small business scene thrive by shopping locally.
Our area is full of terrific shops and restaurants. You can also catch local vendors at the Covington Farmer’s Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon!
